Selamat Membina Negara!

Another Attempt

Blogging has always been close to me. I used to write a lot but now it’s not as simple as it use to be. Writing was my therapy and I enjoy doing it. Even tough my grammar sucks, but through writing I managed to improve.

Now as you are reading this post, I’m just trying to write again. Trying to find peace and solace through what used to be my therapy.

I’ve been onto a long journey since I last wrote here seriously. 2013 is the period where I was having my transformation and that was the period where I last wrote here seriously. One year after, I made an attempt but it was a failure then I got married I try to write again but it just went down into the drain, then Musa came into my life I wanted to blog about my fatherhood but I end up busy changing his diapers.

My latest attempt to revive the blog was recently May 2017 where want to record my journey. This journey that i called an agenda to change my self. I lasted with a few episodes of video but then it just went off like that.

But hey let me tell you something. That agenda to change my self didn’t stop. I made it one step at a time. Now things are different, a lot different. InsyaAllah I hope it will continue that way.

Perhaps this is the end of this revival entry. Hopefully I’ll be coming back here. Hopefully I can share  more and hopefully things will improve.

Thank you for reading.

#ThrowbackPost: Meniti Jalan Yang Lalu

Ke-Ayah-an (Fatherhood) merupakan satu proses pembelajaran.

The Path of The Shepherds

In this world, everything that is good eventually will come to an end. This is the sunnatullah (law of Allah / law of life). Today mark another epic moment of my life in Young Muslims Project (YMP) as Amin is letting go his presidential post and passing on the baton. Through out my journey in YMP he has always been a great leader, mentor, coach, supporter, brother and friend. Like what Rauf (one of my fellow YMPian) said "Amin has always been an anchor in the team".

Even tough we are all sadden by him leaving (well not that his not going to be around) but we also understand that he has achieved his objective. When he took back YMP two years back, it was for the purpose of reviving the original spirit of YMP. All praise to Allah, he has revive YMP, along that way Allah has send him bunch of great lads which I'm also honored to be one of them.

YMP is a platform for young people who share the same idea, same ideology. We are all brought together under one purpose that is to please Allah the All Mighty. YMP is not own by anyone, it is rather a social cause that if you share the same goal, and idea you can be part of it. And during Amin's last speech, he reminds us of this. He remind us what YMP was and what YMP will always be.

Allah has choose me and showed to me that when someone is sincere He will help him. Like Allah said in the Quran, if my slave come walking to me, I'll run to them. Allah guide those who He wants to guide. Those who has been guided by Allah can never be misguided. Yes in YMP you will see how people can change in a snap moment and how awesome is the miracle of Allah.

Today, is a new beginning for us as we move forward with our new leader, our new Mr. President. I believe that Mr Ash will do a great job. He has been prepared and has been chosen by Allah for this and I envy him for that. Always know that we are here to support you, to lift you, to help you to bring this cause to another level. To a level where all YMPians dream about that is in bringing change into the society.

May Allah help us, guide us and always keep our intention sincere. As nothing more that we want other than being blessed by our Lord. So for those who are interested to join us, can give me a buzz or come to one of our event and speak to us. We look forward of seeing you guys there.

The family has grown in a year.

Writing Mojo

It has been really a while since I last wrote here, and I have lost count how many "it has been a while" post I have wrote. But that is the reality people. To keep up with writing is not easy especially when you don't really practice or continuously write. It used to be a great hobby, but I have become a sheep, I let other people's opinion ruin my joy in writing. I let my self down. I stop writing.

Now I am trying to revive the passion, hence that is why this post is very random. I am just going to write whatever that crosses my mind. In Shaa Allah this would be a daily practice with the hope that I'll get my writing Mojo back.

Pray for me my dear readers. I don't know whether you guys are still here or not but whenever you guys read this. Pray for me. May Allah bless all of you.

I'm a Spontaneous Idealists

Spontaneous Idealists are creative, lively and open-minded persons. They are humorous and dispose of a contagious zest for life. Their enthusiasm and sparkling energy inspires others and sweeps them along. They enjoy being together with other people and often have an uncanny intuition for their motivations and potential.

Spontaneous Idealists are masters of communication and very amusing and gifted entertainers. Fun and variety are guaranteed when they are around. However, they are sometimes somewhat too impulsive in dealing with others and can hurt people without really meaning to do so, due to their direct and sometimes critical nature.

This personality type is a keen and alert observer; they miss nothing which is going on around them. In extreme cases, they tend to be oversensitive and exaggeratedly alert and are inwardly always ready to jump. Life for them is an exciting drama full of emotionality. However, they quickly become bored when things repeat themselves and too much detailed work and care is required. Their creativity, their imaginativeness and their originality become most noticeable when developing new projects and ideas - they then leave the meticulous implementation of the whole to others. On the whole, Spontaneous Idealists attach great value to their inner and outward independence and do not like accepting a subordinate role. They therefore have problems with hierarchies and authorities.

If you have a Spontaneous Idealist as your friend, you will never be bored; with them, you can enjoy life to the full and celebrate the best parties. At the same time, they are warm, sensitive, attentive and always willing to help. If Spontaneous Idealists have just fallen in love, the sky is full of violins and their new partners are showered with attention and affection. This type then bubbles over with charm, tenderness and imagination. But, unfortunately, it soon becomes boring for them once the novelty has worn off. Boring everyday life in a partnership is not for them so that many Spontaneous Idealists slip from one affair into another. However, should the partner manage to keep their curiosity alive and not let routine and familiarity gain the upper hand, Spontaneous Idealists can be inspiring and loving partners.

Adjectives that describe your type
spontaneous, enthusiastic, idealistic, extroverted, theoretical, emotional, relaxed, friendly, optimistic, charming, helpful, independent, individualistic, creative, dynamic, lively, humorous, full of zest for life, imaginative, changeable, adaptable, loyal, sensitive, inspiring, sociable, communicative, erratic, curious, open, vulnerable

Career
As a Spontaneous Idealist you are one of the extroverted personality types. You enjoy working in a colorfully diverse group of people who interest and inspire you. Working in a “secluded room” is not your thing. Your sense for the motivation of others is almost eerie. You constantly observe that which happens around you and have no problems noticing all sorts of things simultaneously or communicating with several people at the same time.

Your enthusiasm is contagious to others and that is why your colleagues and friends all appreciate you as an important member of your team. Your articulateness and your sensitive ear for nuances in conversations with others obviously play a role. For you, this team-oriented environment is very important because you need to receive positive feedback and recognition like other people need air to breathe. It would be practically impossible for you to contribute everything you need to maintain your high ideals, by yourself.

Variety, challenges and fun are important ingredients of your area of responsibility. You appreciate receiving new stimulation, meeting new people, and continuously collecting unique experiences. However, too much routine, too much detail work and the necessity to stick with one project for a very long time is not your thing. Your strength are creative problem solutions, discovering new ways and opportunities, the conceptualization of new ideas on one hand, but not so much their concrete implementation on the other. Ideally, you have a staff of capable colleagues that takes over your concepts and runs with them.

The King’s Affair – Introduction

The heart is the king of our body including our mind. We may have not realize it but it is. Can I prove it scientifically? Well I might need to do more research on that.

When we talk about the state of the heart, it is always about our own and not others. The knowledge that we acquire about the heart is for us to analyze and reflect upon ourselves. The moment we use it against others, it just sums up the actual state of our heart.

The Heart is very personal and customized, to the extent that only Allah and one self can judge it. Others cannot do so. Usama bin Zaid R.A was sent in an expedition, he spoke about one man in the battlefield, he said:

“… I saw one of them, he said “laa ilaaha illallah”. I stabbed him, and after that I felt bad and so told Muhammad (saw) what I did. The Prophet (saw) asked: “did he say laa ilaha illallah, and you killed him?” I said: “He said it, but only out of fear for my sword.” He (saw) asked “did you check his heart to see if he believed it?” he kept on repeating that question until I wished that I was not Muslim yet until that day.” [Muslim V-2 P-107]

Usama bin Zaid R.A was dispraised by Prophet Muhammad (SAW) strongly because he judged someone’s intention. It was clearly manifested by the Prophet SAW that when it comes to  matters of the heart it is for Allah to judge. Even the angels do not judge us by our intentions, rather our actions. So who are we to judge others by assuming their intention? Can we conduct an operation, take out their heart and look what is written in it? Certainly not!

Whenever we learn about our heart, it is important to be sincere and true to ourselves because when we know the reality of the heart, it will be the door for syaitaan to come in and tell us how difficult it is to be sincere to our own self. He will paint a picture in your mind that to have a noble heart is actually impossible and so therefore, we should stop wasting time to achieve it.

That is why when judging one’s heart it is important for us to be sincere with ourselves. Wallahi we know our heart and only we can cheat ourselves, but what’s the point? Denying reality? If we cannot be true to ourselves then how can we be true to others? If we are living a lie, what can ensure us that we live our lives upon the truth? How can others trust us when we can’t even trust ourselves?

I would like to remind myself, first and foremost and all of you that the knowledge of the heart is a guideline for us to reflect upon ourselves, not to use it against others. It is not our job to check what’s in other people’s heart. Indeed human are insaan (which comes from the root word; forgetful), we cannot be perfect and we will never be perfect. However, perfect is not a state to achieve, perfect is a journey. We need to constantly strive to be perfect because perfection is the characteristic of Allah SWT, and journey to perfection is journey to be close to Allah SWT.

I ask Allah SWT to forgives us for our previous sins and for Him to turn those sins into good deeds. May Allah guide us and give us a deeper understanding in learning about our heart. May He keep us steadfast, may He make us amongst those who have taqwa to Him and may He grant us hidayah and taufiq for us to implement our knowledge.

Our Little Jannah

“Assalamualikum, and drive safely” marked the end of the #HeartTherapy Camp. Coming home from that was difficult for me. After sending Sh. Waleed Abdul Hakeem off, the withdrawal syndrome started to kick in. When I reached home I was too tired to carry my luggage into the house. But the feeling of meeting your parents? That’s a different thing.

Sheikh Waleed Abdul Hakeem during the closing Speech

I came back home, performed Zuhur and sat down at the TV area catching up with my parents. Talked about the camp but I was too tired to continue. As soon as I heard the calling for Asr, I fulfilled my obligation and straight away syahid on the couch.

Sheikh Kamal El Mekki delivering his farewell speeh.
It was a mistake to sleep after Asr, I had a nightmare which I couldn’t  recall, I guess my Qarin is playing with me. As I woke up, it was already dark and I lost track of time. My body felt so heavy, I can’t even lift a finger. I sat on the couch while closing my eyes. In my mind I was planning what to do after this. I was thinking of fajar prayer; to take a bath, and get ready for work. Suddenly I heard a voice saying “Angah, Maghrib”.

Sheikh Saad Tasleem bidding farewell to Duha & Qasim
That statement put me into shock! What! Maghrib?! I felt like I’ve been sleeping whole night. I immediately opened my eyes and everything was spinning. I woke up and rushed for a quick shower and Maghrib. Later I check my phone, look into twitter and search #HeartTherapy. Everyone seemed to be having withdrawal syndrome. As I was going through the tweets, I forgot about my tiredness and I ended up curving a smile on my face.

Thinking about the Shuyukhs, the great companions, the river and the forest, the ilm, MashaAllah it was a great experience. It really felt like “Our Little Jannah”. Everyone is living by the sunnah of the Prophet SAW. Peace and tranquility were one of the things that I could find there.

Fajr reminder by Sheikh Kamal El Mekki (Our Little Jannah)

Sheikh Waleed Abdul Hakeem @ Morning Lecture by the river side. (Our Little Jannah)

Sheikh Waleed Abdul Hakeem @ Asr Tazkirah by the river side. (Our Little Jannah)
May Allah grant us deep understanding, may He keep us istiqamah, may He give us the taufiq to implement our knowledge, may He keep us steadfast with our Iman, may He again put us among the people of the deen, and In Shaa Allah Ta’ala may He unite us again in the Real Jannah.

Sheikh Saad Tasleem talking about Matters of The Heart
Now here I am, writing this post at my office, my body may be here, but my mind my heart and my soul is there at #HeartTherapy camp. I’m having a serious withdrawal syndrome. Imam Ghazali was correct in saying that we can only feel the nikmah, if it’s no longer there. Nikmah of great companionship, environment, and knowledge is indeed sweet. I wish that we could form a stronger bond that could last forever.

Sheikh Kamal El Mekki with the Fiji Brothers. From left Maiyur, Qasim, Sh Kamal & Ali
I pray that Allah will give me strength to go through this. Reality check, it is time to implement our knowledge. Action brings result. Do not let our knowledge be a witness against us in the Day of Judgment. Remember if we are walking towards Allah, Allah will run towards us. The path of Allah has no speed limit let us all strive for it.

May Allah ease.

Life Update & New Chapter

May peace be upon you and me.

It has been like a while since I've been here. This blog is full of spider web now. Life has been busy for me since I last post something here. I was busy with Konvensyen Bidadari, and right after that I went to London  for two weeks. Came back and started working with Peace Meal, later move on to few more projects with iMuslim, then comes Graduation and now I'm a pupil in Chamber at Albar & Partners. A lot has happened and things change from time to time. Now I'm moving onto another chapter in life, the working world, building up careers, and moving forward.  I pray that Allah will guide me in going through this, indeed He is the one that set my life, that creates me, that put me here in this path.

There's a lot I want to share (as usual), but inshaAllah ta'ala I will find time to write about them. Next week I'm going to Heart Therapy Camp by iMuslim at Janda Baik. This is an awesome retreat for those who are looking to find some inner peace especially to reflect on one self.

What the program is all about?

"This is a program that will focus on the purification of the soul and the cleansing of the heart.
Specially designed for the community to have a better understanding in the fundamental elements of the Heart and how it is significant to one's faith, ibadah, and ihsan
This program is design to help us learn the diseases of the heart such as riyaa, envy, back biting, slander, love for the dunya and to find the remedy for it. We also will be focusing to increase our love towards the hereafter by learning the pleasures of Jannah and the torment of Jahannam, and understanding the questioning of the grave.
And the most important part is to purify our intention in every 'amal', including the attention of joining this course, which is to be closer to Allah, the all Loving and the all Merciful."
 Who are the speakers?

I'm looking forward to this and I hope I can learn & absorb as much knowledge as I can, and In Shaa Allah to share with all of you. If you guys cannot make it to this program, I would love to suggest for all of you to join Sheikh Kamal El Mekki in "How to Give Syahadah in 10minutes?"

What is the course about?

"Invite to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided" [al-Qur'aan, an-Nahel'(16):125]

Do you have a burning desire to give da'wah to your non muslim friends or even family members? Do you sometimes feel you're not "good enough" to be giving da'wah to others? Do you end up in big arguments when conversing with others? If "yes" is your answer to one of the questions above, How to Give Shahada in 10 minutes, is the perfect course for you!
'How to give Shahada in 10 minutes' is a comprehensive module prepared by Sheikh Kamal El Mekki. This module is about the art of inviting others to come back to Islam. Specially designed for Muslims who are passionate about the deen, this 2 - day program will equip you with tools on how to tackle potential provocations and many more!
This program will touch on the obstacles on the path of dawah, methods and techniques in giving dawah, the do's and don't's, clearing the misconceptions and interestingly, when to walk away and avoid confrontations when it comes to approaching others of a different faith.
We are living in a time where the religion of Islam is look down upon. The only way for us to change the perspective of others about Islam is through our actions and by calling others to this beautiful deen. This course is offered to get you started on your first step towards your journey of da'wah. The choice is yours to make!
Don't miss his lifetime opportunity. I'm here to just share the khayr. If you guys have any question, can always call iMuslim or can always email me or contact me. In Shaa Allah I will try my best to assist.

What's Next?

بِسْــــــــــــــــــمِ اﷲِالرَّحْمَنِ اارَّحِيم

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Taqaballahu Minna Wa Minkum

Ramadhan was a blessing. I had a better Ramadhan this year inshaAllah and Alhamdulillah for that. I pray that:-

"May Allah accept all , our solah, our qiam, our fasting, our sadaqah, and all our good deeds in the month of Ramadhan. May He keep us steadfast with our Iman in the coming month until the next Ramadhan, may He grant us the permission and the opportunity to meet again with Ramadhan (inshaAllah), may we become a better person after this Ramadhan. May He grant us success in this world and the hereafter. And most importantly may He keep our heart, our soul, and our intention pure in whatever that we do and may He keep on guiding us.   "

Indeed Syawal is a celebrating month, and for those who has worked hard during Ramadhan this is for the time you to reward yourself. But let us remember that we still have other responsibilities. Don't let this festive mood be a reason for us not to be productive. When we are at work, we are at work.

We have worked so hard in Ramadhan to search for lalatul qadr, and let us keep that up. If in Ramadhan we can fast, lower our gaze, beware of backbiting, sabr, do qiam, at least for the month after Ramadhan we can maintain 5% or 10% of whatever we've done would be good.

"Life is a journey, it's not how we start but how we end it"
Remember, one of the purpose of Ramadhan is for us to be a mutaqqun. If we're out of Ramadhan and things just got back to normal as before, maybe we might want to reevaluate our iman. This reminds me of a hadith by Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam when a sahabi asked him about what deeds that would bring him to Jannah and the Prophet answered deeds that are done with istiqamah.

As long as we improve our life inshaAllah things would be okay. It's not how we start but it's what we do and how we ends it. May Allah grant us deep understanding. Till then.

Books: Leadership, Akhlaaq, Marriage & Childcare by Sheikh Mirza Yawar Baig

It has finally landed on our shores! The collection of books written by the world's renowned speaker, Sheikh Mirza Yawar Baig! Don't miss out on the opportunity as these books are only made available in Malaysia through iMuslim.

If you are interested, do drop us an email at sakeena@imuslim.my or shazly@imuslim.my

What is a Muslim without Akhlaaq?

The man, driving down the street, saw children begging at the street corner. The sight always affected him and as always he wondered at the inequities of
life.

“Master!” he cried to his teacher.
“Why doesn’t Our Creator do something about these people?”

“He did”, said the Master. “He made you.”

If there is one word that can claim to sum up the entire question of leadership, it is Responsibility. When we choose to take a leadership stance we choose to hold ourselves responsible. To be held responsible. We say to the world that we are prepared to account for what we say and do and to be judged by the effects of those things on our environment. Without the willingness to accept responsibility, there is no leadership. Accepting of responsibility is ‘accountability’.

If there is one thing that ails us it is that we don’t act on what we know. Most of us know enough to enter Jannah without reckoning if we only practice what we know. But we don’t practice and so we condemn ourselves to a life of misery in this world and if Allah SWT decides to hold us accountable, to much more when we face Him. I ask Allah SWT to forgive us and to
save us from ourselves.

One of the characteristics of modern life seems to be a breakdown of family life, the foundation of which is a happy and healthy marriage. This has vast implications on individuals and society in terms of hardship, lack of social concern and responsibility and a culture that promotes selfishness and self satisfaction at all costs.

This vicious circle propagates more destruction of marriages and the sad story grows.

Having counseled many couples, over the years, some successfully and others not so, I have come to the conclusion that eventual success of a marriage lies in the hands (and wills) of the partners alone. Nobody can make or break a marriage if the two partners don’t want that to happen.

This short booklet is an attempt to share my learning and understanding of the main issues in a marriage and a look at what it takes to make a marriage a source of great joy and fulfillment in this life. I hope that those who read it will benefit from it and will live happy, productive and satisfactory lives.

The book is focused at Muslims but others can also benefit.

In all the years that I have spoken to parents all over the world, I have always asked one question. The way I do it is as follows:

‘Please think of your most powerful role model.’
‘For how many of you is it a parent?’

I have never had more than 5% of the population putting up their hands. That means that for 95% of people, their role model is not a parent – the two people who invested the maximum in their upbringing. That is a real tragedy but it is a self-created one. It need not happen and this book will help you to protect yourself from becoming a part of the 95%.

Over the years of my working with parents in the Muslim world, I have been asked this question most often, ‘How must we bring up our children?’

Especially today young parents are very anxious to ensure that their children are brought up as practicing Muslims and are a credit to themselves and their parents. This little book is a consolidation of all the things that I have said to people in answer to their question. I believe that parenting is a serious job which must be undertaken consciously; clearly understanding what it entails.

Children have a right to have good parents who can be role models for them and who can not only teach them the tools to succeed in this life but also to take from the treasures of Allah SWT and succeed in the life to come. Please remember that whether you like it or not, you are a role model for your children. Your choice is to decide what kind of role model you want to be…one that they can look up to or one that they have to look down on.

Children listen with their eyes. They don’t care what you say until they see what you do. Anyone who has children has no such thing as a private life. Whatever you do is under the lights, will be noticed, learnt and emulated. If there is any gap between walk and talk your credibility with your children will fall through it. Allah SWT sent you to guide your children and that is what the honorable status that Islam gives to parents in based on; because they are guides of their children.

Parents who behave dishonorably before their children are the worst of humanity – abysmal, abominable and disgusting.

I wish all those who read this book, children who will be a source of delight to them in this world and a source of ongoing benefit to them in the Hereafter.

Ramadhan Series: Are we that many times better?

Ramadhan is a special month for Muslims, especially for those who understand the sweetness of the month. How many Ramadhan have we gone through? Are we improving? Do we love the Quran more? Is our relationship with Allah stronger? It is important for us to go through every Ramadhan with a success.

Photo from IRPC
To know whether we have achieved that success, we evaluate ourselves whether we've become a better Muslim or not as we go through Ramadhan. As Allah mentioned in the Quran in Surah Al-Baqarah (2) : 183 Allah SWT  prescribed fasting upon us so that we may become among the Muttaqun. If by the end Ramadhan we've become closer to Allah then it's an indicator of success walhamdulillah., because as we get closer to Allah we also becoming closer to achieve the level of a Muttaqun.

Let us take this opportunity for us to improve ourselves. As we all know in Ramadhan, as narrated by Abu Huraira r.a  in a Hadith Qudsi, “When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained.”. Allah SWT has created a conducive environment for us to improve ourselves. But we have to remember that this improvement is  not only in Ramadhan. Rather, we must continue for the rest of the year. We must not become a Syaitaan-Based Muslim whereby we're a better Muslim only when the syaitaan is not around. When Ramadhan ends, Syaitaan is back and we fall back into our normal routine. That would be an Epic Fail and that clearly shows that we have lost the whole point of Ramadhan.

Photo from IRPC
Bear in mind that fasting is not just about restraining ourselves from hunger and thirst, it's more than that. Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)”. We take this opportunity to lift up our iman to another level so that when Ramadhan ends, we can sustain our Iman, but that doesn't mean we should shut ourselves from the world and get into a cave and seclude for the rest of the year. Ramadhan is not the month of inaction. It’s the month of action.

Photo from IRPC
Reported by Ibn Maajah Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said that “It may be that a fasting person gets nothing from his fast except hunger & thirst". So let us not waste our Ramadhan, make it count! It has already been 15 days of fasting. Let us take moment to ask ourselves, where are we now? Are we moving along with Ramadhan? Are we 15 days better since Ramadhan started? Or are we stuck at day 1? Or even worse, is our iman deteriorating? If that is what is happening to us, then Ramadhan would be waste, our life would be a waste.

So in this Ramadhan Series I just want us to think, where are we?

Ramadan Series: Rules of I’tikaaf

The following are Rules of I’tikaaf – both in our masjid as well as applicable to any masjid that you may intend to make I’tikaaf in. Please read through carefully and ensure that you follow them to gain maximum benefit of this Ibaadah.

1.        Make your Niyyah and check it frequently to ensure that it remains purely for the pleasure of Allah (SWT) alone. Some people make I’tikaaf to make connections and network with others. This will corrupt your I’tikaaf as your Niyyah will no longer be for the pleasure of Allah (SWT) alone. Don’t waste your time and life.

2.        There is an Ameer of I’tikaaf. He has been appointed to overlook all matters related to your comfort, safety and to manage all matters during the period of I’tikaaf. He must be obeyed without argument. That is your training to prepare yourself for the Khilaafa that you are so fond of talking about. So don’t do anything without the permission of the Ameer. That doesn’t apply to your personal needs i.e. you don’t need to ask his permission to go to the toilet. But it applies to your desire to change the AC settings or other such unnecessary things that people seem to be compelled to do just because they are in I’tikaaf. Resist the urge. Make Tawba and stand in Salah instead.

3.        Set your goals for I’tikaaf. The main goal is to get close to Allah (SWT). The way to do that is through reading the Qur’an, making Dhikr, praying Nawaafil and reflecting in silence. So set your goals for your Ibadaat during I’tikaaf. How much Qur’an do you intend to read? Which Nawaafil do you intend to practice so that they become permanent practices in your life? What do you intend to learn with respect to your own Tarbiyya? Making Tawba and Shukr. Pay special attention to Dhikr which seems to have lost its importance in our lives. Especially to sending Salat was Salaam (Durood) on Rasoolullah (SAS). There is great benefit in this Dhikr and so engage in it profusely. Also ensure that you pray all Sunnah Salawaat and do all the Masnoon Adhkaar after Fardh. Always ensure that your tongue is busy in the Dhikr of Allah (SWT)

4.        You didn’t come to the masjid to browse the net so please don’t ask for the masjid internet password. If you ask for it, our IT Head Geek has been instructed to stare at you blankly in the face until you go away.

5.        Bring your own:
a.    Sleeping mat, sleeping bag, pillow, towel
b.    Toiletries, medicines and mosquito repellent
c.    Mushaf (Qur’an) with your name on it
d.    Don’t bring all that you possess just in case you need it. You are coming to the masjid for a few days. You are not shifting residence. I’tikaaf is also training in how to do without – so be minimalist in terms of creature comfort and maximize your Ibaadaat.

6.        Rights of the Masjid:
a.        Dress appropriately for the masjid. Tight clothes showing the outline of the body, T-shirts with slogans and pictures and trousers which display the underwear are all highly unsuitable at all times, especially in the masjid.

b.        Switch off all lights, fans, ACs when you leave the room. Don’t switch on all the lights when you enter the room. You don’t do that at home, so why do you do it in the masjid? The house of Allah (SWT) deserves more respect than your own home.

c.        Don’t interfere with any arrangements in the masjid. Ask the organizers for anything you need. Don’t ask for the AC temperature to be raised or lowered. It has been set for the general public. If you are feeling too cold, experiment with wearing a shawl. Usually it helps. Otherwise try a blanket. If you are feeling too hot, stand directly before the AC vent until you freeze, then try the blanket. Remember that we only have individual capsule climate control on the Day of Judgment and on that day you don’t want to be among those who are experiencing it.

d.        Don’t take any Mushaf or anything else that doesn’t belong to you. If you didn’t bring it, it doesn’t belong to you. If you want to read it, ask the owner or the Ameer of I’tikaaf.

e.        Neatly roll up your bedding and put it in the place designated for it as soon as you wake up. The masjid is not an extension of your bedroom. It is the house of Allah (SWT) and must be respected. Place your shoes in the racks, not all over the floor. How you treat your belongings shows how you respect yourself.

f.         Don’t leave any of your personal belongings lying around. The masjid is not your home. You are responsible for your belongings. The masjid will not be responsible for anything lost. Please take care of your valuables.

g.        Use bathrooms with care – leave them clean even if you didn’t find them that way.

h.        Use water frugally – that means as little as possible. The taps are not connected to the clouds.

i.          Making noise in the masjid, laughing loudly, talking about worldly matters are all prohibited.

j.          Smile, it is Sadaqa and it endears you to people. Practice good manners. Help others especially the elderly. Give Salaam first. If you are the younger, it demonstrates respect. If you are older, it is a dua to the youngsters. Demonstrate that you are a credit to your parents. You are Muslim. Show it.

k.        You came for I’tikaaf to worship Allah (SWT) – not to hang out with your friends or party or eat different kinds of food, or even to relax.

l.          While in I’tikaaf, worship Allah (SWT) or go to sleep. Sleep is also worship.

m.       Use of phones for essential calls is permissible but not for long social conversations, even if you are describing what an awesome time you are having in your I’tikaaf. Tell your friends about it when you go home. Not from the masjid.

n.        If there is any collective activity happening in the masjid, e.g. lectures, classes and so on, please participate if you wish or worship on your own in a corner. Don’t disturb the activity in any way.

o.        The masjid is the house of Allah (SWT). You are His guests. The food that comes before you is from Allah(SWT).  إن شاء اللهُ you will not be called to account for that food. It is a gift from Allah (SWT). So never complain about the food as that would amount to rejecting the Neyma of Allah (SWT). If you don’t like the food, don’t eat it or get something for yourself from your home. But do it silently without a single word of complaint. Even if someone asks you if you like the food, don’t say you don’t like it. Just say Alhamdulillah. And say it with a smile while being genuinely grateful to Allah (SWT). Remember that is someone eating from a garbage pile while you are complaining about the food. Thank Allah (SWT) that He didn’t switch places for you and thank Him for what He chooses to provide you in His house.

p.        I’tikaaf is not a time to indulge yourself but to deny yourself. Eat less, sleep less. Not eat more and sleep more.

q.        Don’t interfere in the management of the masjid, not even in the guise of, ‘Can I make a suggestion?’ Yes you can, but you may not. The people organizing things know what they are doing. It is their responsibility to ensure that everything is in order. They are doing their best and sometimes they will fail – just like you also fail sometimes. Some of them are also in I’tikaaf. They have enough to do without being bothered by individual likes and dislikes. So leave them alone. If you like what is happening, make Shukr. If you don’t, make Sabr. Both are good for you.

r.         Be ready and volunteer to serve others and do Khidmat of the masjid during I’tikaaf. This can include cleaning the toilets. Consider it a special privilege if this duty is given to you.

s.        The people who serve the masjid are the caretakers of the masjid. They are not your servants, so never ask anyone of them to do anything for you personally, even if it is to bring you a glass of water. Get up and get it yourself and get one for your companion also.

t.          If you don’t like what is happening in a particular masjid remember that there are many other masaajid in the city, country and world. Go somewhere else. Until you discover that they are all the same. Better still make I’tikaaf in the Haram one year. It will cure all your eating and sleeping urges.

7.        Rights of your fellow worshipers – Mo’takifeen
a.        That you avoid all controversial topics and discussions. You didn’t come into I’tikaaf to reform anyone, even if you are the Mufti-e-Azam of the Nation. So do your own stuff and leave other people alone. It is better for you to break your I’tikaaf than to be the source of Fitna for others.

b.        That you don’t disturb anyone else in their worship or sleep. Your talking, reading Qur’an loudly, listening to Qur’an recitation on your iPad or Whatnot without headphones are all a disturbance to others. Don’t do it.

c.        That you never use anything that belongs to others without their permission, even if they are your dearest friend. Also that you don’t ask permission for things which people may feel hesitant about refusing permission but dislike giving it – for example, personal toiletries, towels, iPads or other devises that they have brought to read Qur’an on or their Mushaf which they have marked for their own reading.

d.        That you offer to participate in any maintenance, cleaning activity or work that may be going on in the masjid including cleaning of bathrooms and toilets.

e.        That when you have eaten you make sure that you remove your plate and where necessary wash it and put it back. In other places, depending on the arrangement you may be required to help in cleaning up after Iftaar or Suhoor. Please volunteer for it and don’t wait to be asked.

f.         That you remain clean and pure, cover your mouth when you sneeze and cough, do not make subhuman noises from either end, do not create foul odors or do anything which is likely to be offensive to others, even if you don’t find it offensive yourself. Consideration for others is a part of what you came to learn in I’tikaaf – believe it or not.

8.        Make a lot of dua for yourself, your family and the Ummah of Rasoolullah (SAS). You are a guest in the house of Allah (SWT). You came because Allah (SWT) called you and permitted you into His House. Allah (SWT) calls to give, not to take. There is nobody who honors His guests more than Allah (SWT). So make the most of your status while it lasts and ask Allah (SWT) for His Pleasure, guidance, protection and help for the Ummah. Prepare for Salah in advance and ensure that you pray all Salawaat without fail right from the beginning. It makes no sense to come for I’tikaaf and join the Jamat later or worse still, miss the Jamat altogether. You came to worship Allah (SWT). So do it and do it as much and as well as you can. I’tikaaf is the time to practice.

9.        Remember that this may be your last I’tikaaf and so make the most of it. Don’t waste a single minute of your time. That you were given the chance to make I’tikaaf is a sign that Allah (SWT)’s mercy is on you. Show your gratitude to Allah (SWT) by observing the rules of I’tikaaf and using the time to gain His Forgiveness, Mercy and Bounty. Don’t show ingratitude by wasting your time.
Ibrahim 14: 7. And (remember) when your Rabb proclaimed: "If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allah (SWT)), I will give you more (of My Blessings), but if you are thankless, verily! My Punishment is indeed severe."
